Happy New Year – pregnant style!

If you’re worried about bringing in 2014 in style when you’ve got a bun in the oven – we don’t blame you! It can be hard to feel in the party mood when you’re eating, drinking – and dancing – for two. Here are our top five tips for celebrating in style…

Dig in

But when it comes to food, know what to avoid – and when to stop. Buffets can be risky as some food may have been out of the fridge for longer than an hour. Check with the host and to stay safe avoid the soft cheeses, pate, oysters, raw and smoked fish, raw and processed meats and sushi. Try not to overeat and give into your cravings as you’ll be more prone to getting heartburn and feeling nauseous.

Dress code

It’s a party – so of course you want to look good. But be practical, and ditch the heels in favour of low wedges or cute pumps instead. Puffy feet don’t get comfy in pointy numbers and you don’t want to be toppling over with your precious load. For clothes, choose layers – they’re easier to adjust if you get too hot.

Time’s up

Whatever stage of pregnancy you’re at, you’re likely to get tired more than the other party guests. Don’t be embarrassed to ask for a seat or feel that you’re being rude if you want to head off early. Nothing is more tempting when you’re pregnant than the thought of getting into your maternity pyjamas and sipping a hot chocolate… it’s your prerogative, so use it!

Pack your bag

Forget the tiny clutch for your lipstick, keys and bankcard. You need something a bit bigger to carry snacks to the party such as breadsticks, nuts and dried fruit. Pack some wipes and deodorant in the event of a hot flush and some Mama Mio Lucky Legs in case your feet need a cool-down.

Have fun!

It might seem like ages but it’s only nine months so try and enjoy your pregnancy! You’ll get lots of attention and plenty of people will want to talk to you about it. And you might even get waited on hand and foot. Now isn’t that worth revelling in?
